the indestructible stock of gold already in existence dwarfs the annual industrial use of gold by a factor of almost 50. no pure industrial commodity has a comparable inventories-to-flows ratio

what about diamonds? or paintings? there are plenty of things that can be thought of as a "store of value" without being considered money per se. personally i prefer the store of value in Canadian oil sands.

in any case, gold is not money anymore. and nobody may want to live in a world where gold becomes money again. it won't happen because some Swiss gnome approved by Grant gets elected head of the Fed. it will only happen if the entire society collapses. in that case the best store of value will be a lot of weapons.
