What was going on at that time in history they decided to make the change?

I was taught that this was to make the Jews look better as polygamy was illegal in these Christian countries. Fat lot of good it seemed to have done them. I have never done the research on this though... I would suspect the real reason was to make sure there were enough wives to go around for the Jewish men as it would be much more likely for Jewish women to marry Christians than vice versa in this period.

The Sephardi rabbis never banned polygamy and still haven't though no rabbis in Israel would actually sanction multiple marriage anymore.

There is also temporary marriage in the Talmud. Of course in theory you get married and divorced as much as you like, but this was some special arrangement with less complications...

US laws against polygamy IMO are bizarre. Adultery is not a crime, but if someone regularizes the arrangement they are put in jail!

On the other hand Islam and pre 11th century Judaism would punish adultery severely but look favorably on polygamy.
