I have been extremely busy this week and am way behind in answering posts--sorry! It's really nice to see posters over here who don't come very often--a real treat. I hope I can get caught up over the weekend. I treat liberal columns the same way I treat conservative columns, which is to try to judge the validity of factual information in them. If you don't like a Maureen Dowd or Molly Ivins or whoever's column, then refute the information in it that is presented as fact. That medical ship was featured prominently on a John Stossel pice on 20/20 last night, and he presented the same position Paul Krugman must have. It is a fact that the response on all levels to Hurricane Katrina was abysmal. One of the other facts Stossel presented was the one about Wal-Mart trying to give huge quantities of bottled water and FEMA said it wasn't needed! I see Bush's approval rate is down to 40%, and according to conservative columnist David Brooks on The Newhour (PBS) last night, his popularity is slipping among Republicans, as well. I read Newsweek last night, and found the background of his first visit to the ground in New Orleans an interesting and revealing story. His advisors had recommended that he admit things were going horribly there, because the American public already knew that, and would not respond well anything but realistic statements on his part. But because he hates to admit fault, or criticize underlings, he just couldn't go through with that agenda, and praised "Brownie" of FEMA. Now I actually think Bush's loyalty to friends and staff is one of the warm things about him, but it was a totally inappropriate response when things were going to hell in a hand basket. The talking heads believe this incident was critical in even more Americans becoming disillusioned with him. Where I am going with all this is that all the liberal columnists in the world writing about the Bush administration is irrelevant. The disaster was handled badly, Americans do not feel safer than they did before 9/11, the war effort in Iraq and Bush's tax cuts for the rich have stripped this country of the resources to take care of Americans, and almost everyone is waking up to all of this. Thank goodness!
