Israeli rabbi says Katrina punishment for Gaza pullout:

JERUSALEM, Sept 7 : Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment to U.S. President George W. Bush for supporting Israel's pullout from Gaza, one of Israel's most influential rabbis said in remarks broadcast today.

'Bush encouraged (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon to expel Gush Katif,' Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said in a sermon broadcast on Israeli television, referring to Gaza's largest settlement bloc. 'This is his punishment for what he did to Gush Katif. The time will come and he will receive a pounding on his head.' The spiritual leader of Israel's biggest religious party Shas said New Orleans was devastated because many people there did not adhere to the Jewish scriptures.

Yosef, 85, has often caused controversy with his outspoken remarks. He once said that six million Jews were killed during the Nazi Holocaust because they were reincarnations of sinners.

Israel completed its pullout from all 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and four of 120 in the West Bank last month.

Religious Jews claim the West Bank and Gaza as their biblical birthright, while Palestinians, who make up 2.8 million in the occupied territories, want them for a future state.
