Taro,

...but saved the nation in the process!

True, but Thacher did not destroy the party. Like Reagan, she handed off the governing to (somewhat hapless) successors, who won the elections still running on coattails of Reagan and Thacher. Thier successors lost in subsequent elections.

And, BTW, both in Brittain and the US, when the opposition came to power, it was the New Labor and the New Democrats, much more centrist leaders that won. These new leaders did not make wholesale changes to Reagan and Thacher policies.

The 90s were not kind to the victors of the Cold War. Republicans were beaten soundly, Torries much worse, Conservatives in Canada were nearly wiped out, CDU lost big in Germany.

Now the swing is under way to the center, and possibly to the right. The elections in the Germany are a big test here. If Merkel wins and if she successfully pushes the flat tax plan (2 big ifs), the left will be back to square one. They will be disarmed of their most potent weapon to wage class warfare - the progressive tax system.

Joe

It looks to me like Thatcher pretty much killed the party...

...but saved the nation in the process!

You compare UK and German economies pre Thatcher and now.

What you choose to ignore is the fact that every time a chancellor tries to implement economic reforms the Germans get rid of him.

Everyone laments the state of the German economy but if their were a flood in say Dusseldorf, we would not see the looting and rioting we saw in NO, in LA, in Kansas City, etc. Why is that? Germany is supposed to be significantly lagging the US economically. Isn't that what you and other GOP pundits tell us? After all, they have high unemployment.

So what's the real story, Taro? If the Germans hate their system so badly in the face of 10% unemployment why do they oppose the reforms of that system? Why was there no looting during the floods in Bayern?
