Market Analysis

Cramer's not buying the current common wisdom that the hurricane damage isn't as bad as we had thought.
This 'up' day and across the board strength seem like seasonal fund flows rather than true strength.
Don't be loath to take the graceful exit being offered now, be nimble.

Not as bad as we thought? That's the current wisdom that I heard today: that the damage from Katrina, while extensive, isn't as bad as we thought. So we rally.

I am not buying it. Eight out of 10 times in the last 10 years, we have been up the day after the Labor Day holiday. That means we have some sort of flow-of-funds thing going on that is stronger than any fundamental trend out there.

What's even more important is that September has been a horrid month for many of those years despite the up days, so it seems we are, if anything, following the pattern of a strong opening for the month and then, perhaps, weaker closes as the month goes on. To heck with March; September always comes in like a lion, and always goes out like a lamb.

Look, the strength is across the board, in a very S&P-like way. It feels "indexy" to me, meaning that it is just buying of everything.

I put my money where my mouth is. I have made another round of sales as we go higher for ActionAlertsPLUS. Like everyone else, I want to believe that things are better than we thought. But if that's really the case, it would have helped if we were down last week. We weren't.

Hmm, I've see this movie before. It gives you a very graceful exit that people are very loath to take.

Don't be loath, be nimble!"
