"Then sometime during the day, "a loose barge rams a hole in the levee along the Industrial Canal, further flooding the low-lying areas"."

That must be the one they aren't sure how to plug. It is a concrete wall on the edge of a neighborhood.

"FEMA doesn't just sit back and say "The dumb SOB's didn't call, so we're not going to do a damn thing". <At least I hope they don't.>"

If some of the posters here are to be believed, that is exactly the way they operate, and there isn't anything wrong with it...

"If they are not consulting with cities that are about to undergo a disaster, telling them exactly what to do and when to do it to get federal help, then they are not doing their job."

I sincerely believe that the intent is to shut the department down. Apparently at some point, either candidate Bush or in a previous incarnation, expressed the opinion that FEMA was just another entitlement program. Useful enough, I suppose, when your brother's state, that also happens to be a pivotal one, is being pasted in an election year, but otherwise useless. Can't have those people getting money when life deals them a bad hand, it just makes them uppity. Better than they suffer...

After watching Fox News and readings posts from Harris and DR, its clear they all are making a concerted effort to get the blame off of Bush. I shouldn't be surprised but I am. You would think that at some level it wouldn't be about politics but not with these guys.

The only thing to do is get them out of office and make sure they never get back in.

The plain fact is, lives were needlessly lost in New Orleans due to the failure of Louisiana's governor, Kathleen Blanco, and the city's mayor, Ray Nagin.
