The insurance companies really take a hit too...from the experience with Andrew, they have no choice but to write the checks and not even ask questions. If they try to be fiscally responsible the media runs them into the ground.

I think Allstate paid out more for Andrew than they had ever taken in during their entire history.

I recall a number of people walked on their mortgages after the last big California earthquake. I wonder how much that will happen on the gulf coast.
