This morning I spoke to a plumbing wholesaler. He informed me that his cost on PVC piping rose 50% yesterday. He's passing that on. The reason? Apparently some plant (or plants) that produces the resin from which the pipe is made is closed due to Katrina. No idea when the plant will reopen.

Knowing that all wholesale houses would tell me the same story, I zipped over to Home Depot. I figured they wouldn't have had time to raise their prices yet. They hadn't so I bought about 1200 ft of pipe. (It's all I could fit in my van. :o)) ) PVC pipe isn't that expensive to begin with but I'm mildly concerned about potential spot shortages of pipe in the future. If the combination of resin shortage meets a building boom in the NO area it seems remotely possible.

I might get another load tomorrow. :o))

I suspect other material shortages may crop up in the construction industry. If you have some project started, or about to start, I suggest you plan ahead.
