RWS,
Agree with your PA observations, while you were driving in the West/Northwest, we drove through Southeast, SouthCentral and Central PA and about a 100 miles of the PA Turnpike. Traffic was very light for a holiday, and I am not including the rural areas where it is always light. No lines at gas stations except a small line at one that was selling 20 cents under the going price at the time, whereas for much of the week after Katrina, local gas stations were very busy though we did not see lines exceeding four cars at a pump.

For the Labor Day weekend in this area, it would appear many people filled up before the weekend and stayed home or close to home during the weekend, saving their gas for the work week. Schools here open before Labor Day, so that also has had a lot of effect on the traffic, as opposed to prior years when school opened after Labor Day.

Our own trip was effected in that we drove the car this time and let the SUV at home, 32mpg HWY in the Camry vs 18mpg HWY with the Sequoia.
