Ethanol is used in the U.S. as an oxygenate which both raises octane and causes the gasoline to burn cleaner.

It replaced MTBE, which in turn had replaced Tetra ethyl lead. If we had moved directly from lead to ethanol, we could have saved ourselves a lot of money to clean up MTBE contamination.

Brazil doesn't seem to have any problems with ethanol. If you use some of the ethanol coming from the plant to produce MORE ethanol, the calculation comes out 50% positive.

20% of the new cars sold in Brazil have "flex-fuel" engines that can run any combo of gas and ethanol. Most people run theirs on straight ethanol, because it costs so much less than gas. At a Brazilian gas station, you can buy gas or ethanol. That country has a REAL energy plan that's working.
