Back in the last energy crisis, the US government paid out serious dough to encourage the development of "alternative fuels". Of course, as the US sits on some of the largest coal reserves in the world and as coal is a close sibling to oil, much of that effort was channeled into coal. Several very intelligent approaches emerged, but unfortunately, with the return of cheap oil prices, much of the resulting knowledge was placed on the back burner. I suspect that we haven't seen the last of "old King Coal".
