Little Recovery In US Gulf Oil, Gas Ops -MMS Data

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
September 9, 2005 2:28 p.m.

HOUSTON -- U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production shut in due to Hurricane Katrina saw little recovery Friday, according to data released by the Minerals Management Service.

Shut-in oil production stood at 898,161 barrels of oil a day, or 59.88% of the Gulf's total oil output, a minimal decrease from 60.12% Thursday.

Some 3.829 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas remained shut in, or 38.29% of the total, a slight improvement over Thursday, when the shut-in volume amounted to 40.20% of the total.

Since Aug. 26, shut-in oil production has reached 14.564 million barrels, or 2.66% of annual output. Suspended natural gas volumes since the beginning of the hurricane amounts to 75.759 bcf, or 2.076% of the region's yearly gas production.

Most oil recovery took place in the Lake Charles, Lafayette and Houma districts of the offshore continental shelf.

The New Orleans district, the most directly affected by the hurricane and where most of the shut-in production is located, saw no improvement in oil production. The district, however, saw some recovery in natural gas output compared with Thursday.
