You can at least figure that they're likely to be the ones too poor to get in a car and drive far enough to use their credit cards to check into a motel until they can figure out the next step, which is what my nephew's middle class mother in law did. And many of the Superdome crowd self-selected because they were the ones not afraid, because they were armed and young and full of testosterone, to enter that environment. I'd have chosen the overpass, or my roof, if no bus had been sent to take me to safety. The writer of that email I posted and her friends, good people all, saved whom they could then stayed away from it and chose the overpass, where they saw a man shoot himself, another jump to his death, people die around them, while they waited.

But it's a very bad thing for race relations, what happened; any sociological explanations are unlikely to erase the horror of those events.

This reminds me (new subject) that I've seen Judge Judy express utter contempt for the haggling of the poor who appear in her court over a sofa or bed she considers worthless, over lists of pitiful belongings, a mixer, a bicycle pump, a chest of drawers, a pair of boots, a jacket, a set of tools that was a gift ... and I think... she has no idea that when you're poor, replacing that old sofa she wrinkles her nose at may consume all that person's non-subsistence income for weeks (if there is that category of income), replacing the matching tool set may never happen.
