I live off the grid in a very cloudy area in HI. Up high on the hill. I am adding 12 more 70W Seimens panels(installed cost $5,000) as soon as they get off the boat. I have a 5kw diesel back up. I generate much cheaper electric from the generator than my neighbors pay Helco(about 1/3 the price). Add in the solar and it's a no brainer.

My neighbor just got his first electric bill for his new house...$329. That is before the 17% increase helco just put in before which is BEFORE the recent spike in energy. In less than ten years I will have turned a profit on my solar/diesel system.

The times they are a changin'

Southern states (UT, CA, NV) have incentives that push the return over 20% p.a. A homeowners installing a $20k system has cost of $10k and savings of $150-200/mo in CA.

I live in Northern CA in a 1450sqft house and my energy bill averaged over the year is approx 80-85$/month. My house and heating system are 30 years old and not well insulated. We do not sit cold in winter but don't use the room air conditioner a lot. I have heard about people having astronomical energy bills but quite honestly I don't know how they get there. The Northern CA climate requires very little heating and i don't think Southern CA should be much worse in terms of air conditioner usage. Somehow these savings numbers don't add up at least for somebody with my usage pattern.
