The environmental impact of MTBE is horrible. If memory serves me a patent was issued and refiners have to pay for the privilege of using a dangerous toxic chemical. It was however easier to manufacture locally, and incurred a lower transportation cost. Industry got hood winked. There is a whole ethanol lobby that wants consumers to use ethanol in place of gasoline. It appears that ethanol is a negative energy producer. "The use of MTBE rather than Ethanol in order to save less than a penny per gallon of gas was flat out idiotic." Do you expect disagreement? I didn't think so.
