I'm starting to feel sorry for those guys. Well, not quite. But when they stick to protocols they get zapped and when they act outside the box they get zapped.

It does raise the question of how HS planned to deal with a large-scale terrorist event, if they are fumbling around now trying to find "hasty, novel" solutions.

Indeed.

I found a letter in my mail the other day that got me thinking about the criteria that are used to qualify or certain programs. Could be Katrina aid or anything else.

The letter said that my county is offering $500 to homeowners who meet their criteria. I've thrown it away already but as I recall the income max was an adjusted gross of $75K and assets less than $250K outside of home, one car, and retirement accounts. I have no idea why they're doing this. First I heard of it. Guess it's part of a relief package because home values have gone up so much so property taxes have, too. Anyway, I spent some time looking at this, enough time to scratch my head over the criteria.

First of all, it was household income independent of the number of people in the family. Interesting that they didn't consider that when determining eligibility. $75K is different for a family of one vs. a family of six.

Another is the difference in treatment for someone who has a fat retirement account vs someone who has a fat mattress or a fat bank or brokerage account. What difference does it make where you keep your money in terms of how deserving you are of this break?

I'm probably not curious enough to check it out although I probably should since they said it was for this year only but might be renewed. I'm not sure this is how I want my tax money spent--giving it to people with seven figure 401Ks or single people with $70K incomes.

"The question is, How do you separate the needy from those who just want a $2,000 handout,'’ said Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski, a Republican…

Perhaps Governor Murkowski would like to explain once more just how needy those 50 villagers on that island are that we will soon be spending $235,000,000 to build a bridge there for the 10 cars per day that will travel it.
