Well, Abraham Lincoln (a Republican) said it best: "You can fool some of the people ALL of the time, You can fool all off the people SOME of the time, But, you cant fool ALL of the people, ALL of the time". As the population becomes better educated, despite desperate attempts by the Dems to oppose that, they begin to think for themselves.
