I'd suspect your courses in economics were taught by folks who subscribed to a fading set of ideas that have proven grossly deficient. The classical liberals for most of the past century were generally considered - wrongly - to be people of the past - until recently. There are visions of economics that yield superior results, others that don't.Economics does not govern everything that happens... Mmmm, partially true. Yet if policies that flow from a proper understanding of economics (aka von Mises' Human Action are not followed, most of us, particularly the young and unborn, will fare somewhere between less well and miserably less well. Try projecting that from the past to the current!..advocated compassion for the sick, aid for the poor, and generally caring for those around you.. Absolutely necessary in a civil society. Again, what mechanisms deliver the best long term results, and within what practical limitations?there is no excuse for human suffering when it can be easily alleviated Easily? You're kidding, right? Decent people have been struggling with that that vexing question for a long, long while. While things are getting better for most of us, no perfect resolution is in sight."It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" Believe Bill and Melinda won't be begging on a street corner anytime soon. I'd suspect their organization has done more to improve the human condition than, say, Mother Theresa. Grainne, let me paraphrase what I think is a distinguished philosopher: "The conclusions of economics are largely counter-intuitive. Without guidance, the intelligent layman will likely reach concluusions that that are inimical to the cause he (she) purports to serve. I think Kirzner described you well.
