We spray with Malathion every year.
You would not BELIEVE the uproar the proposal to do so caused! The environmentalists were out in full force and almost convinced Governor Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown to order it cancelled. The agricultural interests in the state knew what was at stake (their livelihoods) and broke his arm, though. The spraying took place with many environmentalists cowering i fear. This in spite of the fact that the state had done a thorough and careful study of insecticides and picked the safest possible.

You probably remember when Rachel Carson came out with "Silent Spring" (in the mid sixties, I think). It got me concerned with environmentalism. However, I take a broader view these days. I think they should DDT Africa and destroy the damn malaria.
You're thinking too small. The planet is more like it. The disease and its vector are quite widespread. A fairly large part of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is a malarial area, for example. And all off Belie and Guatemala.

"Ever think about the good those fresh vegetables from the south do in your long winters?"

It doesn't matter to me where they come from. The U.S. and Canada are close enough that it is not about countries; it is about cities.

It's about individual fruit. The supply of edible fruit here and probably in Canada would drop drastically if the medfly became established. That was not the first bout with it nor will it be the last.
Geographically these days, it's largely about California's central valley.
