I don't think science is chopping away at the basis for human uniqueness, really. Where did you get that idea exactly? I think science is making an argument (based on genetic discoveries) that humans and animals are very closely connected. And I would take the leap from there and say that because we are so closely connected, we should respect and care for animals, and not eat them or wear their furs, or experiment on them, because they are so much like us.
