I would draw the line a lot more leniently than most, at least that's my perception.

I would allow polygamy, for example. But not child marriage. I would allow infant circumcision but not infant clitoridectomy.

I don't even know what the Canadian debate was about, I must admit.

But here in the US a Muslim marriage contract is enforceable, as is a Jewish marriage contract, as is a Buddhist marriage contract. But only if the couple also gets a civil marriage, and the religious contract is executed in a form which is admissible in court.

People have to accommodate both their own religions and the requirements of the state -- which is pretty much the way Christians do it, too.

For example, Catholics can't prevent a divorce, but they don't have to remarry.
