I cannot keep my children young or safe forever. That does not diminish my desire to try.

All you can do, and the best you can do, is give them a framework to view the world and deal with it. That's not to say there won't be rough spots, but if you do the job when they're younger, they'll have a good compass on board to guide them through the teen years.
