Odd you should mention the Adams family. Jim Grant of The Grant Interest Rate Letter, has just published a book on John Adams. He is an admirer. Most people think John Adams was a total flop, being the first person to ever not win re-election to the Presidency (his son was the second).

He looks like a mixed bag to me. He was very regal, aloof and snooty and the average American couldn't stand him. But he kept the country out of war during the XYZ Affair, when we were really, really not ready to take on Napoleon. James Madison pushed us into war in 1812, when we were really, really, not ready to take on The Duke of Wellington.

So, he was personally as creepy as Bush, but he made some correct, human decisions. Adams was a mixed bag. Bush is a bag that you leave burning on a doorstep on Halloween.
