30 years ago the problem was solved: bi-chromatize the parts in contact with ethanol. Perhaps today the industry have even gone beyond that.

Technology today is much more adavanced.

The phase-out of lead from gasoline began in 1976. The lead was replaced with MTBE and more recently with ethanol.

MTBE and ethanol are both soluble in water and gasoline.

Any effects from water solubility you believe you have noticed from ethanol also occurred when using gasoline with MTBE.
