Some do it by turning control over to a higher authority. One of the things driving the born again movement in the early 1980s was people who had lost control of their lives during the 1970s and reacted by getting religion and becoming unquestioning followers of some, usually charismatic, local religious leader. But that isn't the same as taking personal responsibility. For some it just gave them a convenient way to shift blame. They didn't make poor choices, it was society or demons that led them astray. And no, I am not just thinking of Iraq. How often did the administration blame Clinton or someone else for things that happened? From the economic downturn, to 9/11 to the sluggish economic recovery. Katrina marked the first time he ever even admitted that things might have been done better, much less that mistakes might have been made.
