I think it's a sign of desperation. A people feel they have to fight back against a perceived evil, and the only way they can accomplish that, against an overwhelming force on the other side, is through suicide bombings (which also supports the occupation/suicide bombing data).

I imagine that suicide bombing is a last option; if they could strike from a distance I'm sure they would prefer that method.

Since you are so interested in the motivation of suicide bombers you ought to spend more time on the data, maybe even get the book.
