There is a known problem with losing System Restore when SP1 is somehow lost or inadvertently messed with.

From what you've said it looks like that may be the case with your system.

I'm guessing that your computer guy did reload XP over your original copy...it's a relatively easy way to repair existing operating system glitches.

Download and install SP1...give it shot...and as thecow said don't run a system restore after you've downloaded and installed SP1...unless the download really does something nasty to your set up...which it won't. If you do have to run system restore in the future pick a restore date/point after the date/point that you downloaded and installed the patches etc.

Personally I'm not a fan of system restore and pretty much avoid it. It can take up much disk space and can cause as many problems as it solves. I fixed my missing system restore issue just for the heck of it, but I keep system restore disabled.
