I'm sure the whole picture is MUCH more complicated than we'll ever be told. Could be the tip of the derivative iceberg melting, though damn near anything else could be, too.

My grandfather did this, mainly 'cause he lived through the depression and knew lots of folks who got wiped out not because their stocks went to zero, but because their brokers did.....It's a bit of a pain in the arse, though, unless you plan on never selling.<NG>
