As if there was an alternative. You can argue hypotheticals, such as what if Sparc development achieved industry leadership? what if customers didn't prefer industry standard servers? what if customers didn't care about price performance? None of these are realistic to expect, therefore Sun needs to go with what is a viable strategy, if Sun wants to stay business of selling server hardware. Lasting differentiation based on Sparc (and Alpha, Mips, PA-RISC) has come to the end, so Sun needs to build up the differentiation in other areas.This actually marks the point of no return for sun micro because they finally realized they have to start selling products that people actually want to buy; trouble is they still HAVE to sell products that people don't want ( SPARC and SOlaris) and those bring in a lot more revenue. Which is one reason I don't own any Sun at this time. Sun can't, overnight, free itself of dependence on Sparc and Solaris, but they certainly are moving it that direction. I think a better argument (against Sun) is the time it takes to get these new lines on the market. In this new (for Sun) competitive market, time to market is very important. HP, for example, has been benefiting from the advantage that dual core Opteron offer in the market from the time these CPUs were introduced (Spring). I believe, after the big announcement, that these new products are not shipping immediately.Let me get this straight. Sun micro selling sub $1000 servers is a GOOD THING? If they can make $50 or $100 bucks on them yes. To be fair, sub $1000 is just one configuration of one of the models... Joe
