UNITED NATIONS: Commenting on what a Pakistani diplomatic source had called a “chance encounter” between him and President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that while no meeting had been scheduled with the Pakistani leader, “that kind of thing doesn’t happen by chance. I don’t meet anyone by chance.” He said this in response to a question from a correspondent of Haaretz, a leading Israeli newspaper. “Prime Minister Ariel Sharon shook hands for the first time with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday evening, when the two came face to face at a reception during the United Nations World Summit in New York,” Haaretz reported. “The two men briefly exchanged pleasantries and Musharraf introduced Sharon to his wife.”

LAHORE: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said that Wednesday’s chance meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on the sidelines of the 60th UN General Assembly session was held in a cheerful and happy mood, BBC radio reported on Thursday. BBC radio quoted Musharraf as saying that he (Musharraf) was standing with some people in a corridor when Ariel Sharon and several other people approached his group and joined in the conversation. “Ariel Sharon asked me how I was and I did the same,” BBC radio quoted Musharraf as saying. BBC radio also said Israeli newspapers had given special coverage to the meeting between the Pakistani and Israeli leaders. It quoted them (Israeli papers) as saying that the chance meeting between Musharraf and Ariel Sharon might further entail into planned meetings soon. daily times monitor
