Greenspan may not give a rat's ass about gold per se but he and his associates care very much about what a surging gold price ultimately means for the US dollar and its ability to maintain its status as the key reserve currency.

Were the dollar to lose this status US living standards would plummet even without a global recession and the ability of the neo-cons to carry out adventures such as the Iraq war would be grealy curtailed.
