Well, I agree, it's sick in terms of the lives that would be lost. But tejek said something awhile ago that had the ring of truth to it. He said something to the effect that countries and people have to evolve at their own pace. It the U.S. 200+ years to get to where we are today and we had a big civil war during that time. Afterwards, we worked steadily towards integration, until we have a decently integated society today. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good in comparison with the rest of the world. Now Iraq is in the very early stage of Democracy for the first time in its history. Expecting that all will go smoothly is naive. Also, I think a federation of loosely governed Shias, Kurds, and Sunnis is doomed to failure because there would be no attempt at integration, which means differences would be nurtured and accentuated. Integration is the key to peace over the long term. I'm convinced of that. So until you see neighborhoods with all three groups living side by side, you can't really expect peace. Civil war may be the only way to get to the point where their differences can be hashed out. It would be easier if they could just work it out in the constitution, but remember that Americans worked it out on the battlefield in the US as well.

I actually think a civil war is exactly what is needed. It is time for the Kurds and Shiites to wipe the Sunnis out and pave the way for their own democracy. I agree, we have to get our troops out before that happens. Friedman wrote about this. He said that our troops are really holding back the floodgates on a civil war. When we leave, it will break through the floodgates. AND THAT'S GOOD??? No, that's sick, MM. Seriously. That's worse than Saddam. Don't be too hard on him. At least, MM tries. ted
