First off, we all know that under those considerations incredible waste is going to occur, secondly, like you say, why should YOU pay for MY living in Florida? Here is what I would like to suggest to the President if I had his ear. 1. US Government will do whatever it takes to get every evacuated citizen into some kind of temporary shelter. 2. US Government will do all that it can in rescuing any left behind. 3. US Government will aid state and local governments in seeing that the Insurance companies treat their policyholders fairly. (IMHO to deny these claims, especially those outside of NO as FLOOD DAMAGE is prepostorous, any idiot can see this was WIND DRIVEN WATER whether it be storm surge or what, the rainfall was less then 10") 4. US Government will supply at no cost housing for these evacuees for up to 6 months. 5. US Government will assist in the cleanup using SeaBees and other assets at its disposal to the extent it can. 6. US government will provide to the states of Alabama, Louisianna and Mississippi its guarantee to Bonds issued by these states for the massive rebuilding project, these States in turn are to allocate and oversee the dispensing of the funds to the proper localities within their borders, subject to the oversight of the GAO. (govt accounting office) 7. US government will insist that any necessary levees be rebuilt and constructed as good water science would indicate prior to building on any land under sea level. US government will pay the same percentage as is normally paid for such projects as bridges and roads with the states making up the difference. I think that about wraps it up. To me, the above is a very humanitarian approach, giving everyone a chance to rebuild and improve their lot, but expecting them to assist in such rebuilding. This is not a HANDOUT but a HAND UP. jdn
