choosie-

Now if I was actually any good, I could write that
up into a poem for my friend, Madame of butterflies. :)

i realize you're being self-effacing and i know you're
not fishing for compliments but i might as well say this...
because nice things said too late are as rotten as mean things
said too quickly.

i'm not a great fan of poetry but i do like some
of it if it's not too cryptic. many of bob dylan's
lyrics are an example of the kind of poetry i like.
many of his works i don't like at all. there are no
master writers that i like... what i like are the pieces
that are written... each must stand on its own merit.
i don't worship any artist, i appreciate the art.

i have a poem that's been sitting on my computer
desktop for a year. i don't save much but when i find
something really special i try to hold on to it at
least for a while until i can release it to someone
else's pleasure. this one improves with age like
wine or whiskey. it moves me more each time i read it.

i'm going to print it below without telling you the
author's name because i think its as powerful a piece
as i've ever read and i want you to read it without
being influenced by any hype surrounding the persona
of the writer. a thousand years from now it will be
studied and read as an anthem for the common man.
every word necessary to the story is included. not
a single word can be edited or removed without
depowering the piece... and there is not a single
word out of place. to me, it is a masterpiece.

I got off work and life was all it ever was
the night was darker than the night before
and my wife was sadder than the night before
and the land we called our own
was less our own than the night before
and the light grew nearer
but it was not the light of truth
the light grew nearer
and our land grew smaller
and my wife's tears were wetter on my shoulder
as all we held dear
and all we fought for
grew further away
and they said it mattered
that we protected our freedom
as we gave our land to them
and they kept the evil at bay
but the evil they spoke of
was the neighbors who stood for us
and so we cry together in the dark
my wife and I
and all we hoped for is gone
