I like my Lexus SUV for the occasional trips to the supermarket that is 5 minutes away, because it is tall, big, fast, sharp looking, and ... well, SUV like :0)

Of course, at USD 7+/gallon of fuel, I can only use it for supermarket runs ;0)

Pity the guy who needs to drive 15k miles per year in such monstrosities

US roads and parking spaces are considerably wider than Europe.

Distances that people want to travel are greater. Almost every European country (Russia being Euro and Asian) can be traveled end to end in one day with Norway, UK, and Italy being the tough ones.

And gasoline is much less, since the taxation is limited real political forces, and a beleif that cheap transportation and communication are important economic drivers.
