"The US administration's preference is driven by its belief that it would have less-prickly ties with Berlin under a new regime,"

Well, duh. Consider that Ms. Merkel considers Bush to be the model on which to build a new Germany, it is no big surprise they prefer her. Maybe Katrina and Iraq will give Germans some pause.

Merkel reads like Bush except its alleged she's smart. Actually, she is very much like a Jozef Halada.....raised in Eastern Europe and hates anything that smacks of socialism. I spoke to my German friends yesterday........they still don't quite understand what they might be opting for.........a compassionate conservative......German style.

The Germans don't need any pause, that is what they have had for too many years now already.

What Germany needs and needs badly and in a hurry is a serious dose of tax reductions. Here they should - but most likely never would - look closer at the US model as it was started under Ronald Reagan.

An even better option would be to take a close look at what their own tax guru Kirchhoff has proposed. A flat 25% tax with no special deductions allowed by anybody.
