The interesting thing is that it isn't just the Maureen Dowds that are saying stuff like this. In fact, some of the same people who were describing Dubya as "determined", "hands on", "detail oriented" are now using language that is a lot more harsh. And in a critical environment, the stage managing doesn't play nearly as well. Instead of inspiring, it comes off as, well, faked. Which causes even more erosion in perception. Which makes people more critical.

The whole thing looked so fake I thought he was speaking from some place like Disney World. It went over like a lead balloon here.
