And since all the virus instructions I found said to turn off restore I will use the Recovery Tools CD and the Recovery Partition of the hard drive. Find all application CDs. Copy all data files to a CD (including important notes or e-mails). Run the Recovery Tools CD and go to the not-recommended destructive procedure... In twelve minutes the OS is re-installed. Configure the correct desktop background, the correct screen saver, and set the start menu to Classic (and find the My Computer icon on the desktop). Now using the W'ndows Remove utility delete all the junk. Now using Start Menu customization get as much junk as possible off the Start Menu. Next drag un-needed desktop icons to the Recycle Bin. Install applications off CD's. Go to application folders, single click the applications, click File, click Create Shortcuts, and drag the new shortcuts to the desktop. Time demand is about thirty minutes per application. Install data files to the applications from the personal CD. Time demand is about thirty minutes per application. Next, automatic updating of Install Shield, virus-program, W'ndows, and computer-vendor are turned off. Messenger is set not to start with W'ndows or run in background. And the virus program is still left running in the background. And there is still a lot of junk on the Start Menu. The folder views are not yet configured. It is still slow going to Control Panel, it will still flash desktop icons, and it will flash icons in My Computer. And Start Menu document clear is still quirky. But overall W'ndows seems more stable now... Oh, even though automatic updating is off both the virus program and W'ndows are updated with downloads... And a firewall is on but if W'ndows firewall then all exceptions are un-checked...
