A lot of stereotypes about Germans have some underlying truth, in my experience.

One notable well known rebel is the current (for a few more hours at least) Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer.

A few years ago, he was pretty regularly at the top of polls in the weekly "Der Spiegel" (The Mirror) news magazine, as the most trusted politician in Germany.

His parents were resettled from Hungary after the war, he never finished college, fought police in the streets in the sixties and early seventies and allegedly learned English through his job of translating porno films. His regular job was driving a taxi, during his early years starting the Green party.

The idea that someone without a formal education and credentials has made it to the top tiers of government power is truly remarkable for Germany.
