Bubba, we want intelligent people in New Zealand. We have enough of the other kind, but thanks for the suggestion.

You have obviously misunderstood a few things, and since you are a racist bigot, that's not surprising.

<So what we do in QUALCOMM is open R&D in India and China and hire talented, hard-working people there, who are not so used to a cushy life and will work for much much less than the equivalent talent requires in the USA. So their pay rates are not taxed by King George II.

If Hu Jintao gets greedy and taxes my Chinese employees too much, then I will hire Indians instead. Or sell them a citizenship to NZ and they can come and live here [paying off the citizenship over a few years from their salary].

Regarding your suggestion of

<"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
>

That was fine when there was an enormous empty country, [North America], which was under conquest by alien invaders and the invader's culture involved something totally different from the local way of life. The invader was quite happy to have the huddled masses move in, to work, buy things and build from literally the ground up.

That also made sense in the early days of New Zealand for the same reasons as much of New Zealand was unpopulated, especially in the South Island.

Now though, New Zealand is full. Everywhere is owned. There is no wilderness, though there are parks which are protected and kept deliberately as wilderness, though there are so many people that even those wilderness areas frequently have people wandering around them and entry is often restricted to avoid over-loading.

So we don't need huddled masses. Especially those who have an alien culture which includes Islamic Jihad and death for apostates and infidels. Nor do we want Chinese culture which is every man for himself, kleptocratic totalitarian power at the top, and despoliation of the natural world, with no empathy for other living things, and little enough for people, and a racist approach suggesting all Chinese think one way, and are mindless clones with suppression and excommunication of those who dare to think differently.

We are already too much like that as it's a common human trait to be viciously suppressive of those who are different.

The libertarian culture of Christianity with the concept of collective mutual self-interest and individualistic freedom is alien to most countries including China.

If Auckland and New Zealand became just another outpost of China, it would look very much like China, just as it became an outpost of Britain when the British came swarming in. Maori culture was totally different from British.

Maoris liked a totalitarian stone age hunter-gatherer culture of alpha male territorial tribal dominance with cannibalism and slavery. They didn't all like that of course, so when the opportunity for freedom, trade and some material possessions such as houses and Toyotas came along, they grabbed it with both hands.

Maoris enjoyed enormous benefit from having the British come swarming in. That's why they invited them in and got them to sign up to the Treaty of Waitangi, giving Maoris British citizenship, same as the British, with full rights of Magna Carta, habeas corpus, travel and all the rest of it.

What would be so great about being an outpost of Hu Jintao's Beijing? Of course those in Beijing would love to take over and give me full rights as a Chinese serf, with no freedom and no material gains and general servitude and death for any disagreement with Hu Jintao or officious officials. But would there be something good in it for me?

Of course, if there were tradable citizenships in New Zealand, that would be a different story and I might be delighted to sell mine to somebody [obviously not a huddled mass as they couldn't afford the price unless they were talented and could pay it off from their earnings once in New Zealand] and leave the country, perhaps even going to China to live where servants cost a LOT less than in NZ.

I know you won't understand this Bubba and it conflicts with your racist, bigoted ideas of totalitarian dominance and invasion and theft, but there might be another reader who thinks a tradable citizenship is a good idea. And you never know, there might be a flicker of illumination in the dark, racist, recesses of your cranium.

New Zealand has had generations of people building very valuable assets and we do not want to simply hand those over to huddled mass newcomers for no charge. Just as you don't do things for other people for no charge and you don't just have people move into your house and live there for no charge. I have personally built canals, roads, water supply dams, buildings and done a lot more besides. I don't want to just hand possession of those to somebody else, nor do I want people moving into my house, especially for no charge.

PS: Note multiple uses of the word racist and also use of bigot, which means I win the argument as the first to use the r word wins an argument. With bigot included, it's game, set and match. Speaking of which, did you see Michael Campbell is winning the golf in Europe? He's a mish-mash of Maori and British.

If he was still living in a ponga hut, digging for pipis and kumara and fighting neighbouring tribes and eating them or being eaten, he would not be enjoying such a great time.

He's a descendant of Logan Campbell of Cornwall Park fame. You can read about him in Google. His Maori ancestors originally migrated from Taiwan [2000 or 3000 years ago or so during the Polynesian journeys into the Pacific Ocean, ending up as far afield as Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island]. Which means New Zealand owns Taiwan. So Hu Jintao can get stuffed trying to take it from us.
