<what can be done by the average guy to protect his family?>
Buy Tamiflu to keep in stock. Get breathing masks which will filter the virus. Invest in vaccination companies which might come up with the right vaccine. Sell your house at the current very high prices and move to a cheap rural area where it will be easier to avoid the virus. Change jobs now to one near work so commuting in public transport is minimized. Or work in cyberspace to avoid people unless you want to socialize [which you can avoid if the plague starts].

Sell airline shares now. Sell any investments which depend on masses of people breathing and coughing and spitting on each other [by saying potato, peas, and other plosive sounds while serving meals]. Restaurant sales will drop dramatically so investing in a restaurant now at high prices is perhaps not a good idea.
