Porkbusters are here! Its a bunch of people trying to identify and do something about pork barrel spending, in some cases literally in their own backyards:

truthlaidbear.com

The idea is for people to look into federal spending on projects in their own areas, publicly post examples of what they consider pork, contact their representatives, ask for their comments (and tell them they will be published) and publish the comments on the web page.

Who knows? With a little bit of luck, and some good pr or word of mouth, they might actually influence someone in Washington. Wouldn't that be a pleasant change?

I've been told that the original rationale for funding the federal highway system was defense of the realm, that we needed an efficient and reliable means of transporting troops and material around the nation if needed. That was plausible and it sure assisted interstate commerce, too.

What possible justification is there for federal funding of bike paths and walking trails? I had no idea that the feds were the underwriters of first resort for such things - I always thought they were built with local money. Silly me.
