150 Cruise missiles is a ton of firepower. That costs $225,000,000. With the rightwing attacking Clinton at the time, accusing him of trying to change the subject from Monica to counter-terrorism, he did what he could. He also had no time to negotiate fly-over rights from Pakistan. So missiles were the only option.

One of the missiles missed Osama's entire inner circle by less than an hour. Osama always keeps moving and he's smart to do so. It saved his life that time.

When Bush had Osama cornered at Tora Bora after 9-11, he let him go. Why?

The White House Al Qaida desk under Clinton was definitely on high alert for Al Qaida attacks at the Milennium. Give them enormous credit for saving LAX and the California economy. Bush's Texas friends wrecked the California economy.

Bush was warned about huge Al Qaida atrtacks coming soon on 8-6 and did nothing. On 9-11 they struck. Bush could have stopped it if he had made one single phone call.

Bush is the worst president ever. He was at about #3 until a month ago with Iraq and the deficit mess he created from a surplus. Add Katrina to the mix and Bush is now the worst president ever, worse than Hoover, worse than Carter, pick your past pathetic president.

They say 2nd term presidents worry about their legacy. I wonder if Bush is doing that- there is already speculation in the press about his dismal performance, and polls are certainly showing it. Maybe he'll go off and die an unhappy life like LBJ, but I think he is too stupid for that.

A couple of comments on your post.

Boots on the ground is conventional warfare. It is to be used when you want to capture territory. It is not something one uses if the goal is to kill a group of people who caucus for short meetings and are on the move soon thereafter. To get to such targets you use missiles. Looked at it another way, the enemy here is unknown since it is guerilla warfare. Enemy shows up and soon disappears to show up somewhere else.

Regarding the LAX customs agent. We also had another border patrol agent who nabbed would-be terrorists transporting bombs across the Canadian-American border near Seattle. There was no Department of Homeland Security all right when Clinton was in charge. But none the same, there was vigilance on the part of Federal officials. During the nine months of the Bush Presidency leading upto 9/11, the Feds slacked off. After all they saw a President who did not take his work seriously. Taking long vacations, going on extended lunch breaks to go jogging etc. etc. is what the Federal officials saw Bush their boss do. And they slacked off as a result.

Just my two cents.

According to Richard Clarke's book, Clinton left responding to the Cole up to the new President, and STRONGLY urged him to take Al Quiada out, telling Bush that terrorism would be his #1 concern. Bush ignored it as just a Clinton paranoia and took a nap in Crawford - right up until 9/11. 9/11 happend on Bush's watch and will be credited to him by history.

Avenging the USS Cole was Bush's job. He never did a single thing. Ditto when he ignored the 8-6 warnings about impending Al Qaida attacks and let 9-11 happen without making a single phonecall to try and protect the country.

The man has failed us big-time. On many levels. Many serious and costly levels. He is the worst commander in chief in US history. Care to debate that?
