I believe that Egypt has long been a target of Al-Kaydah and that with the bombings of the resorts there, the terror in Egypt will soon be out of control and Egypt will erupt. What Sharon did then, IMHO, was to accelerate the inevitable, with less Jewish blood spilt in its wake.

Also gives him cover for hard line policies on West Bank settlements. overall borders and on Jerusalem itself. This puts PA between a rock and a hard place and if they wish their state they will have to deal with Hamas at some point and at some level. If not, Israelis wont be very flexible.
