I could be wrong but thought his real point is that they are busy day in and day out walking the walk while others are content only talking the talk. It is an uncharacteristic opinion piece published in an unlikely place and that is why I found it interesting.

I'm not up to debating whether or not that makes them better human beings, etc.

That said, all anyone has to do to see evidence of what Hattersley is talking about is look at the response to this hurricane and read the reports of hundreds of churches taking in thousands of people with little government support (see unclewest's recent posts elsewhere of his emails from Mississippi to friends and families). The fact is that the first responders were churches and their members and the final responders, when the MSM gets bored and goes home, will be those same people.

Elsewhere, I read today about evangelicals being derided for myopic world views and only concerned about personal comfort, yet the vast majority of these volunteers and networks are the work of those people. I won't argue they are better people but what they have done, are doing, and will continue to do is admirable.
