Per the CIA, 80-90% of Iran's export income is from oil, 40-50% of the government's budget is funded by that. They have around 125Bbl or reserves. They currently produce about 4mbl/d giving them 86 years till depletion or more likely half that allowing for increased production. So Iran's oil dependency problem is a much worse issue for them than Social Security is for the USA.

And what is your suggestion? That they become even more dependent on oil. That is really brilliant. If you were outlining a bootstrap approach with oil now, shifting to something else, fine, I would agree. But frankly from an economic standpoint I think they are being quite wise. They should fuel as much of there current economy by nuke, and keep the piggy stuffed with oil for selling at very high prices in the future. View it as Iran's social security for their horde of under 20 year olds. That is literally what it is. It sure as heck beats the pants of the SS Trust fund.
