(KRY) have slumped 48% Tuesday afternoon, after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his government is reclaiming national mining assets and mentioned Las Cristinas, a deposit that Crystallex plans to mine. In Toronto, the stock is halted. It last traded at C$1.65, down C$1.51 or 48%, on 2.46 million shares. In a televised speech, Chavez said "Las Cristinas belongs to Venezuela. We will build a national mining company there." During the speech, the Venezuelan leader lambasted foreign investment, calling it "expendable" if foreign investors don't like Venezuela's political and economic model. But it's unclear what exactly this means for Crystallex's operations in Venezuela. The company describes its rights to Las Cristinas as its "principal asset." Company officials weren't immediately available to comment. Chavez said his government will do away with some mining concessions and will no longer extend new ones. But last week, a company spokesman said Crystallex wouldn't fall under a mining-concession review in Venezuela because it has an operating contract from state mining conglomerate Corporacion Venezolana de Guyana, not a concession. Throughout 2005, Crystallex has been waiting to receive a Venezuelan government environmental permit, before continuing with mine construction at Las Cristinas. Investors have been getting nervous about the delay in receiving this permit. As of Monday, the stock had fallen 26% year to date.
