The unemployment rate for African Americans increased from 8.2% when Bush took office, to 10.9% by July 2004 – a 33% increase. While the unemployment rate for whites edged up 1.2 points under Bush (from 3.6 to 4.8%), the African-American unemployment rate increased 2.7 points (from 8.2 to 10.9%). Nearly 1 in 3 African American youth who are actively seeking jobs are unemployed today; a huge jump from just a few years ago. Today the unemployment rate for black teens is 32.6% compared to 14.8% for their white counterparts; a gap of nearly 18 points. US Census Bureau data indicate that during the Bush presidency, the national poverty rate increased to 12.1% and the percentage of African Americans in poverty rose from 22.7% in 2001 to 24.1% in 2002. This was the first increase in African American poverty in a decade. According to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, “Increases in poverty were largest among blacks….
