Shin Beth chief confirms DEBKAfile disclosures of massive Palestinian arms smuggling
DEBKAfile ^ | September 21, 2005

Yuval Diskin said the Palestinian Authority had lost control of the Gaza Strip, Abu Mazen’s Fatah party was falling apart and the Hamas gaining strength. The PA is incapable of exercising law and order let alone disarming terrorist groups.

The Shin Beit will oppose any Gaza-West Bank land link as armed Palestinian groups were striving to transfer their tools of terror to the West Bank as their next arena.

He revealed five recoilless guns were among the tons of explosives, surface, anti-air and anti-tank missiles, and rocket-propelled grenades flooding into Gaza in last nine days. Palestinian Sinai arms dumps were now bare, sending the price of arms in the peninsula skyrocketing.

Annan: Gaza First, West Bank Next
en.chinabroadcast.cn@273071.htm ^ | 2005-9-21

United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, warned that eventually Israel must take similar action in the West Bank as in the Gaza Strip.

"What happens in the West Bank is very much on our mind. For us, the quartet, it is Gaza first and then the next stage will be the West Bank. Not Gaza first and Gaza last."

Annan made the remarks after a meeting with representatives from the EU, the US and Russia on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, said the focus should now turn to the Palestinian elections.

"Elections are fundamental to the continued evolution and development of the Palestinian process. That said, again, we have noted, that ultimately it is the case that there is a fundamental contradiction between armed activities and the political process."

So far, European diplomats and others are eager to push Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, to move quickly in relation to the West Bank, but the Bush administration has made no such open demands of Israel.

New US Ambassador to Israel known as an “Arabist”

New US Ambassador Dreams of Regional Peace

israelnn.com

(IsraelNN.com) Already hard at work, newly appointed US Ambassador to Israel Richard Jones told reporters he dreams of “regional peace” between Israel and her neighbors.

Jones presented his credentials earlier this week after assuming the post from Ambassador Dan Kurtzer, who wrapped up four years in Israel, opting to retire from the diplomatic service following an extensive career.

Analysts state the appointment of Jones was somewhat of a surprise, explaining he is known as an “Arabist” and was not the likely candidate to assume the post as the ambassador to Israel.

Jones has in the past served in diplomatic posts in Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan.
